In just three years, the Brobdingnagian Bards rose from anonymity to international fame, largely due to the success of this CD. Songs of the Muse is an instrumental album filled with nearly sixty minutes of beautiful melodies. The songs are mostly original Celtic and Renaissance styled songs. But the Bards' success can best be attributed to one song, "Tolkien (The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings)". "Tolkien" was the first song released on MP3.com. It topped the charts in 2000. It held the #1 slot for over nine straight weeks in 2001. Its success was accidentally, well-timed with the release of Peter Jackson's adaptation of JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The Brobdingnagian Bards quickly capitalized on the song's success. Along with numerous other great traditional and original Celtic songs, the Bards became the #1 World/Folk band on MP3.com with over 2,000,000 downloads. And "Tolkien's" success sparked the release of a tribute CD called Memories of Middle Earth. But "Tolkien" wasn't the only hit from Songs of the Muse. The Bards adapation of "Greensleeves" held the #1 slot on MP3.com's Renaissance charts for sixteen straight weeks in 2000. Turlough O'Carolan's masterpieces, "Eleanor Plunkett" and "Carolan's Concerto" likewise topped the charts.
